Crown lengthening is the procedure that helps patients achieve the treatment goal of eliminating a “gummy” smile. It creates the appearance of longer, more proportional crowns of the teeth.

In performing this procedure, the periodontist will remove excess gum tissue that is concealing portions of the crowns of the teeth. In some cases, it may also be necessary to remove or re-contour bone that is also covering up a crown in order to expose the desired amount of tooth material. 

Before performing a crown lengthening, your periodontist will complete an initial evaluation in which your gum tissue will be examined and x-rays may be taken to provide more information about the underlying bone structure. At this appointment, you will also have the opportunity to discuss your treatment goals and ask any questions you may have.

A crown lengthening can be completed in the area of a single tooth or a small number of teeth or along the entire gum line, according to the patient’s needs and objectives. The procedure is minimally invasive, and patients may need only a local anesthetic, although many will opt for sedation as well so that they can relax throughout the procedure.

Most patients are able to resume their normal activities within a few days of undergoing a crown lengthening. Be sure to follow your periodontist’s post-operative instructions to reduce your chances of developing any complications after the procedure.
